DAY 11 - MOOSE TRACKS

cold and windy this morning, the mercury is hovering around zero degrees. as we were sitting at the split log picnic table that is the focal point in the cabin for breakfast, discussing what we should do for the day, ELI suddenly gets off the bench, grabs the shotgun leaning near the door, and runs out of the cabin. a moment later, bang! ELI emerges back inside with a huge grin on his face and exclaims 'got him!' he had finally taken the ever elusive forest chicken. we knew at that moment what we would be doing that day, chicken wild rice soup was going to be our dinner...

we geared up and headed across the bay in front of the cabin to the 'island' that separates the cabin from ROBERTSON BAY. we walked the entire length of the island searching for more chickens while following a well trodden moose trail, hoping to find a moose shed along the way.

there is some unexpected elevation on the island and from the top of the hill in the center you can see clear across FORBES LAKE past EAGLE and TROUT ISLANDS to the opposite shore.

ELI shot another grouse as we headed back towards the cabin. we had just enough meat to cook our soup. add a side of corn bread biscuits that we baked in a pie tin in the barrel stove and we had ourselves a well rounded backcountry meal...
